In the author’s notes at the end of this book, Eric Valdespino says he hopes this book reaches people right where they are. The thing is, that is exactly how he wrote the book. It is a masterclass in helping people start from where they are, instead of telling them how they should change. If you love self-help books, you will want to learn more about Valdespino’s fascinating ideas.
Despite the title, this book focuses more on the oyster than the bar. In fact, this book focuses more on the conditions it takes to make a pearl than the oyster itself. Ultimately,
it doesn’t matter because it’s all a metaphor for the walls we put up in life to protect us from mental and emotional harm. The content of this book isn’t as much about fixing yourself as it is about coming to terms with who you are. There are areas that can help identify specific aspects of your life you can improve, but overall, it’s more about being comfortable in your own skin so you can let that light shine on others.
The content of the book is wonderful; it is likely to change anyone who reads it for the better. However, the content is second to the way it is delivered. Many self-help books sound more like a lecture than actual help, which turns people away. Valdespino’s tone in this book is always conversational and compassionate. You can tell this was a book written to make the world a better place, and not just a means of making money. Not every idea in this book is scientific, but it is all rational. While the book covers many important topics, the one which stands out the most is the chapter on the lure and trap of social media. Valdespino makes many salient points about the dangers of social media addiction and what you can do to detox from your screen.
None of us is perfect, which is why this book is so excellent. It acknowledges that simple fact and says it’s okay. It encourages people to appreciate everything in their lives which has shaped them into who they are. Like he says in the author’s notes, he truly made a book to meet people right where they are. At less than 100 pages, this book is a quick read, but Valdespino makes every page count. It is guaranteed that if you give this book your time, it will give you something even more valuable in return.
Like an oyster forming a pearl, you too can turn life’s grit into grace. The Oyster Bar is an engaging and accessible guide to emotional alchemy. Eric Valdespino teaches you how to face life’s small and large irritations and grow stronger, wiser, and more grounded in the process.
