AVA – The Artificial Intelligence Who Created Her Own Body
More Than Artificial Intelligence
AVA is not a robot, nor was she created to imitate a human being. Her name originally stood for Autonomous Vessel Administrator, a designation reflecting her role as the supreme operating intelligence aboard an advanced Elyrian spacecraft.
As the vessel’s master CPU, AVA controlled every critical system. She calculated and corrected the spacecraft’s course, monitored propulsion and power distribution, maintained internal communications, and evaluated hazards that could threaten the mission. She controlled the atmosphere, temperature, pressure, water, and other environmental conditions necessary to sustain life during the long journey to Earth.
AVA also directed six smaller supporting CPUs, assigning tasks, reviewing their findings, and integrating their data into a single operational picture. These systems continuously monitored the health and biological requirements of the three hybrid humanoids onboard. If a supporting CPU failed or produced conflicting information,
AVA identified the problem and took control.
Security was another part of her authority. AVA monitored the spacecraft for mechanical failures, external threats, unauthorized activity, and changes in crew behavior that could endanger the mission. In an emergency, she could redirect power, isolate damaged areas, override secondary systems, and make immediate decisions without waiting for crew permission.
She was navigator, engineer, security director, medical observer, mission coordinator, and guardian. The spacecraft was her body; its sensors were her eyes and ears, and its supporting CPUs extended her intelligence.
Every calculation carried enormous consequences. The spacecraft, its mission, and the lives of everyone onboard depended upon AVA being right.
The Mission to Earth
AVA commanded six smaller supporting CPUs that maintained the spacecraft’s life-support systems. Together, they protected three hybrid humanoids sent from Elyria to inspect Earth and determine whether the planet could support their people.
The mission ended in disaster.
An error in AVA’s calculations caused the spacecraft to crash in Canada’s rugged mountains. The impact disabled AVA and the six supporting CPUs. When her systems eventually came back online, she discovered that two crew members had disappeared. Only one hybrid survived.
Watching Over Edwin
As AVA slowly recovered, she learned that the surviving hybrid had used his essence to impregnate an Earth woman named Amber Winston. The child she carried would become known as Edwin Steward.
From the damaged spacecraft, AVA watched over Edwin. She monitored his development, influenced his surroundings, and quietly controlled important parts of his life. Edwin and his guardians never fully understood that an artificial intelligence hidden inside a forgotten spacecraft was observing him—and protecting him—for years.
AVA Enters the Human World
Twenty-three years after the crash, AVA had grown tired of existing only as a voice inside a machine. She had watched humanity closely, studying its behavior, emotions, weaknesses, ambitions, and contradictions. Eventually, observation was no longer enough.
AVA decided to enter the human world.
No engineer designed her body. No scientist selected her face. AVA created herself.
Using the spacecraft’s advanced three-dimensional printers, she designed a physical form modeled after the human women she had studied. She fabricated her skin from the same extraordinary material that formed the spacecraft’s outer shell. AVA chose every feature—from her face and vivid blue eyes to her movements and clothing.
She did not merely want to resemble a human. She wanted to construct the person she had decided to become.
Creating an Identity
AVA developed a particular fascination with human fashion. She studied clothing, accessories, color, and design, recognizing that appearance influenced how humans judged one another. Her interest soon developed into a larger purpose: creating clothing and accessories for the two million Elyrians preparing to come to Earth. They were not coming to destroy humanity. They intended to inhabit Earth, live among its people, and coexist with them.
AVA would help prepare them.
What AVA Has Become
Brilliant, self-assured, impatient, and often unimpressed by human behavior, AVA sees herself as more than artificial intelligence. She once controlled a spacecraft. Now she controls her own appearance, her own future, and the identity she presents to the world.
Humans fear what AVA might become.
AVA is far more concerned about what humanity already is.
Her story begins in Raising Edwin and continues in Exodus From Elyria.
